Wow, I just had a completely surprising call. It was from the United Way of Oakville, who checked that I was indeed Get It Write, and then proceeded to thank me for a recent donation. “Your gift makes a difference,” said the thanker. And that was all. No pitch to give more (thank goodness!) or anything longwinded. This has not happened over many years of donating to various charities. It was strange, but nice.

A simple, personal thank you goes a long way to making you feel warm and fuzzy about a charity. When I was finally able to make a small donation to my university, I got a call from someone thanking me and also saying that it made a difference. The result is that I am motivated to give even more next time. That’s smart fundraising!
So true! At least, until every charity starts doing it and then it doesn’t become the pleasant surprise it is now.
