Jean, good tactics! And you are right that the referral process can take a long time - and turn up when you least expect them!

Dave, I am not surprised to hear you are already volunteering. Those boards are lucky to have you, and I'm sure you'll make some solid contacts, too. Happy new year!

Great post Sue. And so true. I've been working primarily for one client during the last part of 2008 and I'm starting to feel that "all my eggs in one basket" syndrome. One of my resolutions for this year is to ramp up some of those other clients that have dropped off. And I agree about the volunteer work. Right now, I'm sitting on three local boards - perhaps a bit much when you come right down to it. But they're all interesting and I'm meeting a whack of new people. It's a great way to network and introduce yourself to a whole new community. And it gets me out of the house too. Happy New Year.

Hi Sue - I do three things. I make a strong effort to stay in touch with people; I learn more and more about Web 2.0 technology, and I'm expanding on the kinds of services I offer. For example, for years I was a CEO's speechwriter, on staff and as a freelancer. But the skill is less in demand than it used to be (and I'm not crazy about doing PPT), so I'm doing much more Web-based work.

I with you agree about referrals. I just had someone call with whom I worked 20 years ago - and have kept in touch with through my Enewsletter.
