Do what scares youIs your first reaction to something scary to say no? Mine usually is, too. But last year I decided that when my first response to something was “Oh no, that’s not gonna happen,” I was going to say, “Why not?”

It was an interesting exercise that led me to accept two speaking engagements (small university classes, but still!). Most recently, and more importantly, saying “Why not?” meant I spoke at my son’s wedding. I was afraid I would not be able to speak for crying, but how could I pass up such an important occasion?

The October issue of my newsletter, Wordnerdery, shares some tips for staring down fears, including imagine the best that could happen, imagine the worst, practice and go with a buddy.
