Image of a hand holding a mechanical stopwatch against a yellow background. Text reads, “10 tips to focus and write faster. New in April 2025 Wordnerdery.”You may not want to give AI your company’s or client’s information. Or you may not be fast enough at coming up with the detailed prompts you need to get a usable first draft from AI, or the time to make up for AI hallucinations.

When you have something to write, quickly, how do you focus and get it done – without AI?

Staying away from the internet is a biggie, of course. So is how you approach writing, including allowing yourself to write a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad first draft (with a nod to Alexander in Judith Viorst’s book).

The April issue of my newsletter, Wordnerdery, shares 10 tips to help you get organized, in the right frame of mind and in the flow of writing. One that I use all the time is inserting placeholders instead of words or sections. So instead of spinning my wheels trying to come up with just the right word or phrase, I’ll insert ANOTHER WORD FOR X or CLEVER OPENING, and return to it later.

What tips and tricks help you write faster? Or how have you harnessed AI to play a part?

This issue updates a blog post I originally wrote in 2016.
