I read somewhere a plea not to use the tired ‘Tis the season in either a headline or an opening sentence. Having read that, I’m noticing that as the “holiday season” (as so many love to call it) approaches, that impulse is out there, growing stronger with each passing day. Last week, with a month to go until Christmas, I had already run across it five times. In the last two days, twice that, at least.
- ‘Tis the season to say thank you
- ‘Tis the season to dust off boxes of ornaments
- ‘Tis the season to fill our homes with boughs of holly.
Herewith my personal vow not to use it! Are you with me?
While I haven’t run across ’tis the season, I am certainly a victim of the tidal wave of “holiday” this’s and that’s [punctuation confirmed with CP Style…]. And sometimes for variety I’m okay with “holiday” but I run the risk of offending those politically correct among us by working hard to call Christmas, well, Christmas.
I’m with you on calling Christmas Christmas! It’s becoming a battle, though. Sometimes we are guilty of being TOO darn careful and politically correct.
Jolly good idea.
