In a column talking about the panic generated by the state of the economy, Andy Wibbels said, “You only have so much control of the chaos swirling around you – how can you batten down the hatches and still lay the groundwork for something new?”
His answer: “When sales are down and leads are disinterested, start working on the Next Thing.” To find it, he says, “Go back to what inspires you.” And that led to advice on timing: “The best slogan for networking I’ve ever heard is, ‘Dig your well before you’re thirsty.’” Isn’t that a great slogan?
(The post also includes a link to the funny “Brokers with hands on their faces blog.”)
Yes, yes, I agree. Great advice, great slogan. I believe the media is hyper-ventilating about the poor economy. And whatever happens in the U.S. is just about the most important thing in the world, and will have a worse effect on the rest of us. I don’t believe it.
While I’m sorry for people who are out of work, out of multi-million-dollar bonuses (no, I’m not) and with a devalued portfolio, there are plenty of people who do not have every last red cent in the stock market, who have no pension plan, who never have a guarantee of any income whatsoever. We are the self employed, small business owners, entrepreneurs who HAVE always and realize that we WILL always have to make our own ways in the world. We never make headlines. We exist under the radar and will manage just fine. We always have. We are resilient. So are the others who are shocked by this economy. Maybe they just don’t know yet that they will also finds ways to go on.
